With its geography as much as its history, the Perigord is stamped by several regions: Northward, meadows and forests evoke the Limousin; Eastward, the craggy limestone plateaux stretch toward the Quercy; Southward, the vineyards are next to the Bordelais; Westward, the ocean light arrives through the Charentais. The strong identity of the Périgord consists in the diversity of its land, that makes everybody think to the origin and history of mankind: the caves of the Vézère valley, the Gallo-Roman museum, devoted to the ancient life style, in Périgueux, the castle of Castelnaud, witness of the Hundred Years’ War, the medieval fortified towns all over the territory, the townhouses "Renaissance" in Sarlat... For two million and a half, man has been applying himself on that soil to take advantage of the nature.
