Chateau Mouton Rothschild, located in Pauillac area, is a Premier Grand Cru Classe - First Growth*.
That distinction is shared with Chateau Margaux, Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Haut-Brion.
In 1853, the baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought in Pauillac the Chateau Brane Mouton at auction, and renamed it “Chateau Mouton Rothschild. It has been classified Second Growth in 1855, then First Growth in 1973. That change in the initial classification has only been the second one since 1855. The Chateau Motto was “First may not be, second do not deny, Mouton am I” and became then “First am I, second was I, Mouton change not”.
In 1924, the baron Philippe de Rothschild has been the instigator of the full bottle-filling at the Chateau, which has been made before.
Since 1945, the Great Wine label is not only different each year but also illustrated by a famous artist (amongst who figures Dali, Miro, Picasso…).
The Great Wine of Chateau Mouton Rothschild is world widely one of the most prestigious and famous Bordeaux wine. The mythical vintage years are: 1945, 1961, 1970, 1975, 1982, 1985, 1990, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005.
